Trip to Batam

Rise and shine! Waking up early on a lazy Sunday to lim kopi (drink coffee)

3 day-old Mr Bean/黄豆/Hock Kee decided to tag along with his owner for a 1/2 day trip to Tempat Senang Spa on  Batam Island, Indonesia. A quick note about Mr Bean - He's a cute little brand mascot for the ubiquitous Singaporean soy bean milk chain, mr bean.

Grabbing a quick meal before boarding the ferry. He can't help but feel a tinge of sadness for his cousins, the coffee beans

Then again, he has to admit they do taste darn good.

Bean pops by the VivoCity Build-a-bear workshop before going to the HarbourFront Cruise Centre.

Bean is all tucked and ready to go through customs!

A little packet of 橙皮干(dried orange peel) to prevent sea-sickness on the ferry.

It's his first trip abroad!

He could barely make out Singapore's skyline in the rain. But he was amazed by the posh waterfront houses and yacht berths at Sentosa Cove.

His famished owner was too self-conscious to take his pictures during her long wait at the Batam customs, where she felt compelled to act like a regular tourist. Anyway, they finally reached Tempat Senang, a quaint little spa villa in the midst of a golf course.

And off for hours of pampering.

Bean, looking all refreshed after some good ole Indonesian massage, a *gasp* coffee bean body scrub and a facial. Notice how white he looked!

Lounging around after dinner at the lobby. It was a nice little getaway for the young little bean, he hoped he'll get to travel with his owner again with her loud, obnoxious friends.

Meeting his Indonesian brothers just before boarding the return ferry back to Singapore.

A Place to Call Home

Monkey and Hindergaard finally moved into their sparkling new house.

The bed may look a tad too feminine but the duo is quite happy with it.

The only gripe Hindergaard had with their new place is the lack of good, solid food in the the kitchen

They watch TV all day when their owner is not at home. 

And a little role-playing for Hindergaard after a few drinks. Hindergaard is a St Bernard from the Swiss Alps, a rescue dog with a mini barrel of whiskey hanging round his neck. He tends to take a few sips from time to time.

Inspired by Paul the Octopus, WTD (What The Duck) embraced his inner psychic within and ventured out of the house to follow his calling and test his new-found prowess.

WTD had an epiphany

... and his subsequent transformation.

He travelled far and wide, impressing everyone he came across with his uncanny insight and impeccable fashion sense, and his stature grew. He was received by all with opened arms, and welcomed with free clothing, buffet food, and medicinal-tasting beverages.

"Lead us out of the dark!" they pleaded. All these expectations and draining of psychic energy began to take a toll on WTD. To be continued..

Soft toys make friends online

Dr Lee Boon Ooi, a psychology lecturer at the National Institute of Education, said the toys represent something that the people long for or lack in their personal lives.
The behaviour is normal and a part of their psycho-social development, he said.
"If (playing with) a stuffed toy represents a personal need to nurture someone, the person may grow and develop in this aspect of personality," he said.
He thinks a sense of emptiness and poor quality of social support can also cause people to seek companionship from inanimate objects.
Ms Portia Searle, a counsellor at The Counselling Place, suggested that such Facebook accounts might be a form of escape from negativity or pain in an individual's life.
People with negative self image may create an alternative reality by "recreating themselves or masking themselves as their pet or toy", she said.

I do not disagree with some of the probable assessment of the psychological drivers for creating any form of social media accounts for stuffed toys. But so what if it's truly escapism through inanimate objects? How is this different from a love for fictional characters, and desire for inanimate fashion/lifestyle products and brands for all that matter? At least the toy persona is entirely your own creation and manifestation of your own creativity and cognition of the world ;) So I say, blog on!
